Apartment Renovation in Rehavia

Rehavia was laid out in the 1920s as a garden suburb, and its apartments still show it: thick Jerusalem stone, ceilings over three metres, and original terrazzo underfoot. We renovate here in English, for owners living in Jerusalem and for owners who visit twice a year.

What we renovate in Rehavia

Full apartment renovation

Stone walls, tall windows and original detail taken back to structure and rebuilt as one job.

Kitchens

Usually a matter of opening up the back of the flat without losing the proportions of the room.

Bathrooms

Rebuilt from the waterproofing up, which counts for more with this much stone sitting above it.

Electrics and plumbing

Mandate era runs replaced in full, chased into walls that need the right tools.

The buildings in Rehavia

Most of the housing stock around Ben Maimon, Aza and Ussishkin went up between the late 1920s and the 1950s, much of it in the International Style that Richard Kauffmann brought to the neighbourhood. That means generous room proportions, tall casement windows, deep stone walls and, in a good number of flats, original terrazzo floors and ironwork that are worth keeping.

Those stone walls are the part that surprises people. They are load bearing and genuinely thick, so drilling, chasing cable runs and moving a doorway all need the right tools and a proper read of the structure first. We survey before we quote, so the plan you approve is one the building can actually take.

Many Rehavia apartments have been part renovated once or twice since the 1960s, which tends to leave a mix of old and newer infrastructure behind the plaster. We open up, check the whole run of electrics and plumbing rather than only the visible stretch, and tell you what we find before we carry on.

What owners in Rehavia usually ask for

  • Restoring original terrazzo, plaster mouldings and ironwork
  • Replacing Mandate-era wiring and pipework in full
  • Opening up a kitchen by removing non structural partitions
  • Rebuilding bathrooms with proper waterproofing
  • Adding air conditioning without spoiling the ceiling line

Renovating from abroad, or in English from here

A good number of the Rehavia flats we work on are second homes, used a few weeks a year and empty the rest of the time. Running a renovation on one of those is a normal job for us rather than a favour. You get a single English speaking contact, a reporting rhythm agreed at the start, and a written schedule you can hold us to from wherever you are.

Because nobody is dropping in on the site, the reporting has to be good enough to replace that. We send scheduled photo and video updates rather than waiting to be asked, and anything that would change the agreed price comes to you in writing before it happens. Payments follow milestones that are finished and inspected.

One English speaking contact throughout
Scheduled updates, not updates on request
Written approval before any cost change

Questions about renovating in Rehavia

Can you run a Rehavia renovation while I am abroad?

Yes, and a good share of our Rehavia work is exactly that. You get a named contact, a fixed schedule of photo and video updates, and approval points before each stage that changes cost. Nothing that moves the budget happens without your written go ahead.

Are there preservation restrictions on Rehavia buildings?

Some Rehavia buildings carry conservation status, which mainly affects the facade, the windows facing the street and the roofline. Interior work is usually far more open. We check the file at the municipality for your specific address before design starts, so the plan is built around what is actually permitted.

Can original features be kept in a full renovation?

Usually yes, if that is decided early. Terrazzo can often be lifted, cleaned and relaid, and original doors and hardware can be stripped and rehung. It takes longer than replacement and we will price both options so you can choose with real numbers in front of you.
